Welcome Miss Reese!

Sorry for the lack of updates. We've had quite the week!

Shortly after baby Reese MacKenzie was born, she had difficulty breathing. She was retracting quite a bit and making a grunting noise with every breath. They took her to the NICU for observation and later admitted her when she was not able to stabilize on her own. The neonatologist is still trying to decide whether her breathing difficulties were because of a fast delivery and aspiration of fluid or of her immaturity (37 weeks).

Six days later, we are getting to know our precious baby girl via our visits to the NICU. As of today, she is only on her oxygen machine (she has been weaned off of an oxygen hood, feeding tube, two IVs and her bilirubin blanket!!) and we are just waiting for her to wean herself off of that. Things are definitely looking up!

She's a great eater, and a sweet little girl who is ready to come home. Yesterday she was pulling off her chest leads when we were visiting! Her big sister Ella is also ready to be at home, but has loved this mini-vacation where she has been entertained by Grandma Mary and Grandpa John, Lavonne and Paul, Grandpa Scott, Auntie Sarah, and cousin Sadie, and her Grandma Karen. Needless to say she's been quite busy. She's even visited her baby sister many times and tickled her toesies and sang to her! She will be such a big help!

Although our situation is less than ideal, we consider ourselves very very blessed! Our stay in the NICU will be very short compared to Reese's little friends in there, and we thank God many times a day for her health and our family's! We'll be home uploading pictures and taking walks on the ranch soon enough!

Spencer and I cannot thank you enough for your thoughts and prayers and help throughout this whole process! Thanks a bunch!!!

  1. I remember the day that "big" old Adam was born--6 wks early. They immedicately put him on a respirator, with needles and tubes everywhere. For 5 days the machine breathed for him and they had to give him drugs so he wouldn't pull it all out. Look at him now-nothing slows him down. Miss Reese will be leading everyone around soon enough. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

  3. Congrats, Bethany and Family!!! I am sending thoughts and prayers your way through this entire transition! I am sure Ella is going to be as great of a sister as you are, and that you will continue on as a rockstar mommy!!!

  4. I LOVE that name! Caleb had all those symtoms, but it cleared soon enough that he didn't end up needing anything. I am sure it will be SO nice to finally get her home! Hopefully you're prepared to keep a close eye on that loving big sister! Cole likes to "help" a little too much sometimes! Can't wait to see pics! Let me know in a while how it is with two!
