Buffalo Jump

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, a determined group ventured out to the buffalo jump.

A little bit of history for you to enjoy:

A buffalo jump is a natural feature that the Native Americans used to kill buffalo. The buffalo would be herded into a "funnel", then chased off the edge of the cliff, rendering them immobile. Nearby the Native Americans would process the game, using all the parts of the buffalo for sustenance.

The buffalo jump is located in my backyard.

(sort of)

In the past, this has been the site of many an archaeological dig, both by professionals and by my husband and his brother and cousins.

Our intent was not to find any major artifacts, we just wanted to get out of the house and enjoy the unusually spring-like January day.

And we did. There was an ongoing "find the coolest rock" game, fruit snacks and juice boxes, animal bones, and horse shoes.

Of course we enjoyed watching Hank and Leroy exhaust themselves in an everlasting game of tag.

And the littlest ones even thought trying a bit of buffalo jump dirt would put a lovely cap on the trip.

So to all my future visitors: the buffalo jump is a must-see on your stop. In the spring we'll be able to see the faint lines of the tipi rings, wildlife will be getting a taste of Sadie Creek's treat, and you'll have an experienced guide to help watch for snakes and open and close the gates. It is worth the hike, and you may even be lucky enough to find yourself a souvenir arrowhead.

Now, who could pass that up?
